arg
stupid blogger timed out and erased the nice long babble I
had written.
Anyhoo, as for a career change, dangnabbit YES!
Its funny though, the other night a friend of my parents' was
over (hadn't seen him in years) and he was asking me how I was
etc - so he asked me if I liked my job - and I told him, not
really. And then it came up that I'm more disciplined in training
(triathlon) than going to work. And he found it really interesting.
The fact that here I was, with a degree (bogus one) but who was out
doing physical labour (in a sort) - meanwhile there are tons of kids
who barely finish high school and who HAVE to do labour work...
As he put it, he doesn't like where society has gone (he's 70+ years
old btw) - he thinks one of the reasons its gone downhill is because
no one really uses their hands for work anymore. And quite frankly,
not everybody is good at using their heads - yet our society forces it
upon us. The few who do work with their hands are usually looked down
upon and also don't pay well. I never really thought about it, but its
true -
and it got me thinking - do sys admins, systems integration, support, jobs
go to those ppl who would've normally been blue collar jobs? I see all
around me, the snob culture of designers. They think sys admins do jack sht
all day (which sometimes I have to agree with) and think they're worthless.
And most around here are paid less. Are they our "lower class"?
Quite frankly I guess this pisses me off a lot - mainly because I love working
with my hands - I'm not saying I'm good at it, but being outdoors, being your
own boss, doing zero stress work is great... I'd love to do it.
Its weird how most of us end up like our parents - I think deep down I've always
battled with a conflict to teach. Not sure if I'd be good at it, but the way
my parents and mr.70 year old were talking - they were like "teaching is great,
no stupid bosses, no pressure (except maybe publishing), summer vacation, and
somtimes great students that are a pleasure" (aka ppl like Julianna) Anyhoo
I'm rambling.
Summer vacation - uh... how 'bout Florida? I don't think I'd have the time to
go switch around time zones. Not to mention we can go see the circus! Besides
that, I don't think I'd take any more than a week. I want to spend some time
doing other things - like prepare for my own race, go to see Dan in his ironman,
help Sue move etc etc.
We could also rent a summer cottage when Amy is back in town (for Yi's wedding?)
I wanted to during the winter, but haven't had the time to look and I've always
been a little weary of it - its very easy to get snowed in when you're in the woods,
and without hot water/electricity it can be a drag.
Hockey: Canada won the game, and I agree with Andrew, they were pretty darn lucky.
But this *is* the olympics. I dunno how many of you watched the gold medal curling
game but both teams made some intersting "errors" throughout - one minute Canada
would have the advantage, the next the Norwegians would. Like they say, its not necessarily
the best athlete that wins - its the one who can best cope with the stress.
OR you can interpret it as the best organized. Obviously Sweden screwed up bigtime
against belarus in the semi-s - maybe it was underestimating them, maybe it was
being tired after all the games they played - etc etc. its not all dumb luck.
(btw, when I mentioned the goalie was from McGill, I said the WOMEN'S team...)
olympics: I was a little ticked off though - I barely saw any ski jumping! I love the
sport (don't ask why I'm not sure myself) but cbc barely showed it on the evening highlights
(after 11:30pm?) ... I don't understand at ALL what happened to the spanish x-country
ski guy - but goes with any sport - I find it scary how ppl who sign up at nautilus for
a personal trainer get a nice introduction to creatine and all that crap. Its pathetic.
I see fat chicks at the counter asking for more of some powder (and I always think of
Simpsons when Homer goes to buy "Massive Weight Gain Powder" and the jock says "lucky for
you, this don't work" ) ... ?!@?? If your body can't handle the stress, listen to it.
EEeeeeeeeesh. and that shit looks gross man. And hey, does ANYONE else have ppl in their
gym training in PYJAMAS? Specifically flannel? I mean wtf??? And what I REALLY don't
understand is that two of these LOSERS training in PJS aren't even fit but they have pretty
darn cute girlfriends... ????????????????????????? chicks dig flanneL?
Last but not least spending, dang, I'm bad. Lets leave it at that.
I don't even have a car like either of you two! ugg and I still have
a number of big ticket items I'd like to get but know I don't have the
dough for...
